MP URGES CARERS TO 'CARE FOR THEIR INCOMES & PENSIONS'

December 4, 2009 12:41 PM

Carers UKNick Harvey, MP for North Devon, added his support to the Carers UK's carers' rights campaign being held today on Friday 4 December.

"It's a real concern," says Nick "that carers in North Devon may not be getting all the help they are entitled to.

"Carers are fulfilling a vital role in society and without them the NHS and social care system would not be able to cope.

"It is essential that they are given information about their rights so that they get the support they need in order to plan for their futures."

There are over six million unpaid carers in the UK who provide care and support to family, friends and neighbours, providing unpaid care worth an estimated £87 billion each year. The carers Rights campaign, run by Carers UK, seeks to increase the take-up of benefits and raise awareness of carers' rights and the support that they may be able to get in order to protect their pensions. It might be the Carers' Allowance, council tax discount, Pension Credit or Hosing Benefit that makes a difference.

Carers UK urge carers to get in touch with its Adviceline 0808 808 7777, adviceline@carersuk.org or www.carersuk.org to receive a free booklet.

Carers can also pick up booklets in their local Lloydspharmacy store.

If you are a resident of the North Devon constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
