In response to the recent announcement that Devon County Council intends to sell off the county's care homes, Nick Harvey says: "All in all it looks like a panic measure which is likely to see things going on the cheap and it is hard to see how the long term interests of Devon's ageing population will be served.
"This looks like a crude cost cutting exercise rather than a strategic shift in the pattern of care provision. It is being done in a remarkable hurry. The bleak financial picture which brought the previous initiative to a halt is still much the same, and it is hard to see how this is going to get any better."
Here in North Devon this announcement will affect Beech House in South Molton, Lydiate Lodge in Lynton, Oakwell in Bickington and Burrow House in Ilfracombe.
South Molton councillor David Worden said he would be watching very carefully to ensure services at Beech House were still available because changes brought "uncertainty and worry" for residents, relatives and staff.
