NICK HARVEY BRINGS THE `KEEP CHIVENOR 24 HOURS` CAMPAIGN TO LOCAL SHOPPERS

January 29, 2010 4:12 PM

The campaign to keep Chivenor Search & Rescue cover 24 hour took another step forward today as North Devon MP Nick Harvey collected signatures at the Sainsbury's store in Roundswell, Barnstaple. Nick was joined by Ilfracombe Town Councillor Bob Thompson and his daughter Judith, who set up the Facebook campaign to stop the cuts.

The Facebook group has attracted over 10,000 members and Nick has also received hundreds of signatures in his online petition. Nick wanted, however, to give people who might not have access to the internet a chance to have their say.

Nick commented: "I would like to thank people for stopping on their busy shopping trips to sign our petition today. It is clear from the many personal comments and stories people have told me, that the helicopters are much more than just another service. Local people are livid that the Government is even considering downgrading this lifeline to our community and I want to give everyone the opportunity for their voice to be heard".

He added: "I will keep doing everything I can to make sure the Government listen to local people this time. I would like to keep encouraging people to sign the petitions and write to the Minister Quentin Davies objecting to these cuts, also copying my office in with their letters. We need to make sure that the feelings of the people in North Devon are very clear."

If you are a resident of the North Devon constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
