MP CHALLENGES GOVERNMENT OVER CADET FORCE CLOSURES

February 9, 2010 10:37 AM

Cadets on paradeNick Harvey says, "I have been informed that the Ministry of Defence under pressure from the Department for Children, Schools and Families is to fund new state school cadet units by closing those in independent schools. This will mean the loss of half a dozen units a year.

"There can be no denying the long term benefits membership of such units bring, even for those who do not subsequently go on to join the armed forces.

"Clearly this is an area that the Government feels it can make 'efficiency' savings without any real harm or outcry, which is of course complete nonsense. Everyone recalls the uproar (and quite rightly) that greeted last year's TA cuts which resulted in a Government u-turn.

"I am currently lobbying the Secretaries of State for Defence and Children, Schools and Families on behalf of the Army Cadet Force Association to ensure adequate funding for an organisation that celebrates its 150th birthday this year."

If you are a resident of the North Devon constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
