The Hunting Act remains a contentious issue, with the hunting fraternity resenting it, and opponents understandably aggrieved that it appears to be widely flouted. The Liberal Democrats stance is to allow MPs to vote how they wish - this 'vote of conscience' position is unlikely to change, even though we are now talking about a reversal of the ban.
Nick Harvey comments, "The long running saga of the hunting law is clearly not over yet. Without advocating a return to the previous free for all, I do believe that the legislation will have to be re-visited and something workable put in its place.
"The legislation is, in my view, flawed and needs reviewing. The current Act could only be policed and enforced if precious policing resources were diverted from the wider fight against crime. It is open to serious debate whether this would be justified.
"Equally it weakens the wider rule of law to have legislation on the statute books which cannot in practice be enforced. If one section of society can appear to be 'above the law' with impunity then others are likely to follow suit. The current situation pleases no one."
