The total number of signatures objecting to the Government's planned reductions to North Devon's vital Search and Rescue service are now well over 14,300. "It is heartening," says Nick Harvey "how the whole of North Devon has rallied to this cause - we have to signal to the Government that future S&R provision has to be right from the word go."
The largest number of signatures, some 11,000 are on the Facebook campaign organised by Bob and Judith Thompson, with another 1000 collected via Nick Harvey MP's website, and a further 1000 signatures collected by Nick and his team at Roundswell's Sainsbury's and in Barnstaple's Pannier Market.
In addition there are further petitions in shops in Lynton and Lynmouth, Combe Martin, Mortehoe and Woolacombe and in Barnstaple. Braunton Parish Council is circulating a similar petition in their area which is designed to feed in to the existing petitions and be presented at the same time.
Nick will also be teaming up with North Devon Journal to present the Journal's '24 not 12 for Chivenor Campaign' results in London. To date the Journal has collected 1,356 coupons.
Nick told today's Journal following the Government's preferred bidder announcement, "At this stage the details of the contract are still to be thrashed out before a final deal is signed - and that will be towards the end of the year. In the meantime, there is a General Election.
"A new Government may be able to climb down from this decision much more quickly and without losing face, than the current minister can."
