Nick Harvey says "Two days after the Government announced its plans for an Exeter unitary authority; it appears that the Department for Communities and Local Government is at odds with its' Secretary of State. Peter Housden, the department's most senior official has warned the plans are unworkable.
"Mr Housden has said that this option is simply not economically viable. Fundamentally the tax base in Devon is only so big, and there will be only so much money to go round. My worry is that saddling Exeter with debt as a result of setting up 'home rule' will simply result in a poorer Devon, especially in the rural areas.
