An avalanche of complaints about the lack of gritting of minor roads to villages and icy pavements in towns has prompted Nick Harvey MP to launch a survey of parish Councils to find out just how things went wrong for so many people.
In their first budget proposals since taking control of Devon County Council, the Conservatives are planning to cut £1.3m from the funds for the routine repair of potholes. In view of the enormous damage done to the roads and pavements in recent bad weather, Lib Dem Councillors are amazed at this short sighted proposal.
Lib Dem Leader Brian Greenslade described it as "penny wise, pound foolish," adding "during our leadership of the County we increased funding for highway maintenance by 22 per cent and found an extra £2 million for repairs after last February's freeze.
"The recent bad weather has just made things worse with potholes breaking out all over the place in huge numbers.
"We cannot understand why the Tories have targeted this line in their budget for next year as it will just lead to bigger repairs bills in the future."
