Nick says, "News that the Education Secretary is under pressure to shave £500 million of his budget makes a mockery of the Governments 'Every Child Matters' strategy.
Secretary of State Ed Balls' cuts include £135m from quangos (including a £40m cut for Becta, which promotes the use of IT in schools, plus a £55m cut from training and envelopment); £100m from after school clubs, £50m from teacher training bursaries, £5m from comms funding. £1m from Teachers TV and £7m from admin costs.
"All this is an unwelcome blow, especially the cut in funding to after school clubs, as many working parents in North Devon rely on these in lieu of child care provision.
"Another £200m in savings has to be found and I am particularly worried that the learning mentor scheme which is directly funded by the Government could also suffer."
"The Government is desperate to claw back its £170 billion deficit, but at what long term cost?"
