"News that the Local Government Association is seeking £100m of emergency funding from the Government to patch up our weather ravaged roads is likely to cost all of us in the long term," says Nick Harvey, MP for North Devon.
The Southwest is particularly blighted by this problem and has the second highest number of potholes (131,000) after the Northwest (152,000) according to figures from the Asphalt Industry Alliance.
Nick adds, "In light of the Government being terribly strapped for cash I am not sure where the LGA thinks this money is going to come from. There has been a 60 per cent increase in damage to our roads over the last two years and the cost to local authorities will be increased by vehicle compensation claims. The worry is that we will be facing a pothole tax."
