Almost 200 people gathered at Pilton College last week to hear Lord Ashdown give the opening address for the Liberal Democrats general election campaign launch here in North Devon. It was a case of standing room only as every one eagerly waited to hear what Paddy and Nick had to say.
Nick supported by his wife Kate was formally presented to the local Liberal Democrats and fellow supporters as their Parliamentary Candidate at 7.30pm on Thursday, 8 April.
To a hushed audience Lord Ashdown extolled the virtues of Nick Harvey's proven track record as North Devon's MP. He said there could be no denying how widely respected Nick was as a first class constituency MP.
He added: "Nick and the Liberal Democrats at both County and District level had an enviable record of getting things done."
Indeed Nick is consistently rated as one of the hardest working MPs and has become known as a widely respected Shadow Defence Secretary for the Liberal Democrats. He also played a leading role in opening up Parliamentary expenses to public scrutiny.
Nick opened by saying "It has been a privilege to serve the constituency for the last 18 years and that as ever the people of North Devon remain my priority."
"We have achieved much as a party," he said "opening Barnstaple's long awaited down stream bridge and bypass, securing investment for schools, preventing the hospital trust being merged with Exeter's, winning back economic grants fro North Devon, saving Chivenor as a military base and battling for the 24 hour helicopter. …
"It is important that we do not lose all this good work and much remains to be done."
His pledge was yet more hard work for the people of North Devon.
At the end of a very successful evening Nick was clearly moved by the rousing standing ovation he received from his supporters.
