Armed forces minister, Nick Harvey, joined the crowds supporting our troops at Plymouth's Armed Forces Day event on Sunday. A Week of celebrations honouring the armed forces culminated with flypasts and a service on Plymouth Hoe.
Mr Harvey, MP for North Devon, said: "Plymouth is a hugely important military city and a focal point of the South West, which is a hugely important military region.
"Having seen people across the country showing their support for our armed forces, it's great to see the crowds here as well.
"I know it means an awful lot to our men and women serving abroad."
Asked about the 25 per cent cut to departmental budgets spelled out in last week's Budget by Chancellor George Osbourne, and how they would affect the armed services, Mr Harvey said: "There will certainly have to be reductions.
"You can't have cuts without there being an impact, but the objective is to keep our current capability and capacity on the front line."
The plight of the Westcountry's armed forces has come into sharp focus recently, with four Royal Marines from the Taunton-based 40 Commando among those killed after fighting in Afghanistan last week.
