NICK HARVEY SIGNS UP TO MATERNITY PLEDGE

Local MP Nick Harvey has signed up to a Royal College of Midwives (RCM) pledge to protect maternity services from cuts and ensure first-class maternity care. The RCM has launched the pledge over fears that savings that have to be made in the NHS may have an impact on the amount of money spent on midwives and maternity services.
Nick said: "As birth rates have been rising steeply and pregnancies and births are becoming increasingly complex, I am happy to add my name to this timely and important pledge."
Cathy Warwick, General Secretary of the RCM, said: "I am delighted that Nick has signed up to this pledge, and really welcome his support.
"It is imperative that spending on maternity does not fall and that it matches the demands placed on maternity services. Great strides have been made in maternity provision over recent years with increasing choice and more midwives. We need to be building on this welcome progress and protecting it for the future."
The pledge states: Women and their babies deserve excellent NHS maternity services, protecting the quality of care they receive must be a priority as important decisions are made on public spending, and I will speak out in favour of first-class maternity care for the people I represent.
