Under the previous Government Petroc was one of 79 colleges given "Application in Principle" status by the Learning and Schools Council as part of it's Building Colleges for the Future Programme. Despite having already spent £6million as part of the planning stages, the £75 million expected to help construct a new college in Barnstaple and establish a new skills centre in Bideford was under threat as a result of a national £5 billion shortfall in funds.
Therefore, the future of these plans remained uncertain as the Government was unable to guarantee funding or pinpoint which projects may have been most affected.
Previously Nick has lobbied to get the LSC and the then Government to honour their commitments to Petroc's capital development project and had thrown his support behind and Early Day Motion to this end.
In a House of Commons debate on Building Colleges for the Future on 25 March 2009 Nick called on the Government to safeguard North Devon College's plans.
Nick has recently made representations to the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills welcoming his announcement of a £50m pot of funding for capital investment in Further Education and is supporting Petroc in seeking to secure funds from this additional resource.
