When water services were privatised in 1989, South West Water's infrastructure, including the pipes and sewerage treatment works, were in dire need of repair. Unfortunately investing in repairing this infrastructure has been passed onto customers and, because of our small population, each customer has to bear a greater percentage of this cost.
In addition, we have had to pay for the clean up of our coastline after years of pumping raw sewage into our seas. This means that only 3% of the population has paid to clean 30% of the UK's coastline.
